CANDIDATE CONGRATULATES CO-OP OVER ZIMBABWE TRADE ACTION
“I am very encouraged to hear that the Co-operative Group has suspended all trade with Zimbabwe”, said Donna Hutton, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Clwyd West.
“Having seen the terrific importance to us all of co-ops at their recent annual Congress, this principled stand comes as no surprise.” continued Mrs Hutton.
A spokesperson for the Co-operative Group said, “The Group has reached its decision after very careful consideration. It has been prompted by the worsening political crisis in Zimbabwe and the increasing calls for more decisive action to maximise the pressure for change on Mugabe’s regime”.
Robert Mugabe was recently confirmed as President in an uncontested election, boycotted by the opposition and condemned by the international community.
Congratulating the Co-op, Mrs Hutton called for others to take action. “The Co-op Group does not do a huge volume of trade with Zimbabwe, and it would really help if the likes of Asda, Morrisons and Tesco will follow their lead.”
