UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR COLLAPSED BRIDGE

Labour Parliamentary Candidate Donna Hutton returned to Gellifor at the weekend to wish the collapsed bridge an “Unhappy Birthday”.

the collapse of Gellifor Bridge

Donna Hutton said:

“Floodwaters caused the bridge to collapse on 7th September 2008. Early this year I was told the Council could only carry out the works during the summer months, but the bridge would be ready for August.

“I have spoken to local residents who are extremely fed up, being hugely inconvenienced, day after day. Residents who commute short or long distances have to travel almost 12 miles extra per day, which means a regular commuter could by now have clocked up almost 3,000 extra miles, costing well over £1,100 each at AA rates. That extra cost, let alone the extra time and inconvenience, is an intolerable burden.

“There is a real suspicion that a bridge would not have gone unrepaired for over a year if the collapse had been in a town.

“I am trying to find out why even the long delay we were expecting has been exceeded, and I am pressing for the bridge to be opened again quickly.”
